A Moroccan researcher, Adnane Remmal, could have found a solution to the ineffectiveness of certain antibiotics. His secret? The use of essential oils.
A revolutionary new treatment
A Moroccan researcher has just received the 2017 public inventor prize awarded by the European Patent Observatory, for having succeeded in making antibiotics effective again, which had become ineffective by the resistance of bacteria. A feat made possible thanks to essential oils. With this new treatment, will the problem of bacterial resistance to antibiotics soon be a bad memory?
” Antibiotics are like a key that will open a lock », Explained the researcher to our colleagues at BFM TV. ” If the bacteria undergo a mutation that prevents the key from entering the lock, the bacteria become resistant. We have shown that essential oils are not keys that open locks. Rather, it’s big hammers that break the doors “. A revolutionary discovery.
Isolate the molecule responsible for bacterial resistance
We already knew the many benefits of essential oils, but never before had anyone thought of turning to them to replace antibiotics. This alternative offers a double advantage: that of being effective but also of being natural. All the work of Professor Remmal’s team consisted of isolate the molecule responsible for the bacterial resistance of thyme or oregano essential oils for example.
Once isolated, this molecule was combined with antibiotics to “boost” their effectiveness. And the results exceeded all their expectations. It still took 10 years of research to develop this treatment.. Already, clinical trials have been launched. If they are conclusive, a drug could be launched as early as next year.
