Dr. Mallar Chakravarty, a neuroscientist at the University Institute of Mental Health and his colleagues at the University of Toronto (Canada) have designed an algorithm allowing, from theMagnetic resonance imaging (MRI), to predict whether a person’s cognitive faculties are at risk of deteriorating Alzheimer’s disease within 5 years.
For their research, the results of which have been published in Plos Onethe researchers used data from more than 800 people: healthy seniors, others with mild cognitive impairment, as well as patients with Alzheimer’s disease.
“We are currently working to test the accuracy of the predictions using new data to determine if we can predict the disease even further into the future.”said Dr. Chakravarty.
In thelack of treatment for Alzheimer’s disease, this algorithm could make it possible to identify people at risk in order to offer them specific follow-up and initiate lifestyle changes likely to delay, or even completely prevent, the onset of the disease. Alzheimers.
