Americans’ sperm quality has deteriorated significantly since 2005.
- Semen is the fluid released during ejaculation.
- It is a liquid that is composed of 10% reproductive cells, spermatozoa, and 90% seminal fluid, from the prostate and seminal vesicles.
A new study reveals that the quality of Americans’ sperm has deteriorated dramatically over the past 16 years.
Decreased concentration and mobility
To reach these conclusions, scientists at the Reproductive Medicine Associates of New York clinic analyzed more than 176,000 semen samples taken from 3,500 donors between the ages of 19 and 38. All were in good health at the time of the analyzes and did not live in the same place.
After taking into account the body mass index (BMI) of the members of the cohort, the researchers noted, in sixteen years, a significant drop in the concentration and mobility of their spermatozoa. These changes were observed in all the geographical regions studied.
Unidentified causes
The essay did not analyze the causes of this trend. However, in their conclusions, the researchers indicate that there could be a link with lifestyle changes (diet, stress, etc.) or increased exposure to endocrine disruptors.
The recent decline in sperm quality in many parts of the world revealed by certain studies is a subject of debate within the scientific community.
