This is surprising news that delighted the Washington Post: “America, you can congratulate yourself! Your cholesterol level is stable…” Indeed, the US Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has just announced that the number of Americans suffering from high total cholesterol has decreased from 18.3% in 1999 to 12.4% in 2016. “This is gratifying news”said Margaret Carroll, health statistician at the Centers for Disease Control.
Pursue prevention among women aged 40 to 59
According to health experts, this good news is due to several factors:
- public awareness of the harmful effects of cholesterol
- the prescription of statinspeople at cardiovascular risk
- the removal of trans fatty acids number of industrial products.
But the CDC report also points out what still needs to be improved. Prevention must now be aimed primarily at adults aged 40 to 59, and in particular at women in this age group, because they are the ones who have the highest total cholesterol level.
