On May 28, the Minister of Social Affairs, Health and Women’s Rights, Marisol Touraine, inaugurated the first nursing home for young people with Alzheimer’s disease. Located in Cesson (Seine-et-Marne), it acknowledges these patients who are too young to enter EHPAD (accommodation establishment for dependent elderly people), but not sufficiently independent to stay at home.
In France, 32,000 people under 65 are living with Alzheimer’s disease. The symptoms quickly become disabling and require daily help. Support often provided by relatives. “It is to these families that this establishment brings the necessary comfort and serenity”, declared Marisol Touraine during the inauguration of the Foyer de Cesson. This center alone should accommodate around fifty patients.

The home for young Alzheimer’s patients combines drug and non-drug approaches. The multidisciplinary team should in particular develop art therapy and music therapy. Two methods that have been proven in nursing homes. The Secretary of State for Disabled People and the Fight against Exclusion welcomed this “decompartmentalization” between the management of the disease and its after-effects. “You have to know how to combine high-level therapeutic strategies when it comes to drug treatments, adapted care, but also educational interventions and daily support to act on the consequences,” she underlined. of the inauguration.
The opening of reception centers dedicated to young patients is in line with the Neurodegenerative Diseases Plan. Marisol Touraine recalled the main measures to help carers: new Houses for the autonomy and integration of Alzheimer’s patients (MAIA) and specialized Alzheimer’s teams (ESA) will be funded by the State. 65 new support platforms will also be created. But above all, the nursing home for young Alzheimer’s patients will not remain a hiatus in the French landscape. “An establishment of the same type will soon open its doors in Grenoble”, announced the Minister of Health.
