“Come on, another little drink?” In its latest barometer on the issue, Public Health France reveals that almost one in 4 French people drink too much alcohol, given the “lower risk” limit established in 2017.
Conducted in 2020, the survey covered a total of 14,873 people between 18 and 75 years old. The range is therefore wide … and reveals that 23.7% of the French exceed benchmarks for alcohol consumption, set at “no more than 10 standard drinks per week and no more than 2 standard drinks per day“by having days in the week without consumption.
Men drink more than women
What are the figures for alcohol addiction? Men would be more affected than women, they are 33.2% to drink too much, against 14.7% of women. Of the total number of people who drink too much, 68.1% are men. The 2020 figures are much the same as in 2017, but may have increased with the series of lockdowns due to the Covid-19 epidemic.
If the study emphasizes that 47.7% of men who exceed the benchmarks have a diploma less than or equal to the bac, it also states that we find a large proportion of men and women with high incomes and many women with a higher education qualification (43% of women). “Women with a high diploma, unemployed men and people (men and women) with high incomes were more likely to exceed the benchmarks,” says the study.
