Long dangerous, the installation of an abdominal aorta prosthesis by surgery is no longer the only option. Now, it can be placed through the femur, a big step forward.
Problems related to the abdominal aorta will be better and better managed. A new method to treat the artery is emerging. Originally, the classic surgical intervention consisted of placing an aortic prosthesis. Now, we can perform a much less invasive endovascular operation consisting of passing a catheter through the femoral artery, at the level of the thigh, to place a prosthesis inside the artery itself. A considerable advance given that this operation frequently occurs on elderly subjects, therefore less equipped to withstand a heavy surgical operation.
Savings over time
The study which explored this method also looked at the cost of the operation, which is essential from the perspective of democratization. For the new formula, the financial resources required for the procedure are greater. But the increase in cost is clearly offset by a shorter length of stay for the patient and a reduction in complications following the operation. The study even reveals that, over time, the new process will cost less than the conventional operation.
