June 18, 2004 – The Canadian Center for Research on Touch presented the Ashley Montagu Prize to Tiffany Field, founder and director of the Touch Research Institute (TRI) in Miami.
Tiffany Field is a pioneer in massage research. In 1992, she founded the Touch Research Institute at the University of Miami School of Medicine, the only center in the world dedicated to the study of touch and its scientific and medical applications. For 20 years, the researcher has been particularly interested in the impact of therapeutic massage on the development of the child. She has written several books, including Touch and Touch Therapy. She also holds the chair of the International Society on Infant Studies (ICSI).
The Ashley Montagu Award aims to recognize a personality who has made an outstanding contribution to the recognition of touch around the world. The Canadian Touch Research Center will present this award every two years. The award was named in honor of Ashley Montagu (1905-1999), brilliant anthropologist and popularizer of science, author of the book Skin and touch: a first language.
The Ashley Montagu Prize was awarded at the last International Congress on the Science of Touch, which was recently held in Montreal.
