Hearing and sight are precious senses. Losing them means losing contact with the world and no longer apprehending its environment in all its richness. To maintain top hearing and vision, you have to start by taking care of it!
OF COURSE
Hearing with difficulty is a real handicap, because hearing participates in communication and exchange with the environment. However, throughout life, this sense is little protected, exposed to incessant nuisances. It’s hard to understand at 30 that listening to loud music will affect your hearing one day.
DETECTION OF PRESBYACUSIA
Over 50% of people over 80 complain of hearing loss. Recognizing that hearing weakens is not easy, which explains why many seniors are not diagnosed in time and gradually suffer from partial deafness. However, it is prudent to monitor your hearing from the age of 60, the age at which the first signs of impairment appear.
Indeed, presbycusis – this is the name of progressive deafness linked to age – detected too late is more and more difficult to treat with age; and other hearing pathologies can occur: tinnitus (parasitic noise in the ears), hyperacusis (exacerbated sensitivity to noise, certain sounds are heard in an exaggerated manner).
TALK TO YOUR DOCTOR
At the first signs, it is advisable to discuss the matter with your attending physician who can already undertake a certain number of checks: otoscopy (examination of the ears), acumetry (hearing screening which consists of whispering in the patient’s ear or use a tuning fork). The examination may reveal the presence of a plug, which can be removed by the doctor. On the other hand, if he finds lesions of the outer ear (pinna and external auditory canal) or of the middle ear (eardrum), he will order more detailed examinations from an ENT specialist.
