Watch the season finale at 9pm on BBC One
You just got your driver’s license. Congratulations! Now you can finally spend a small fortune on the purchase and insurance of a very boring city car. Maybe an Opel Corsa, or a Hyundai i20, something like that. Wise, frugal, yawn. Could our presenters be able to find cheap, easy-to-insure cars that are just that little bit more exciting than a pre-owned Corsa? They make an attempt in the fifth episode of TopGear season 31. Or in internet talk: TopGear S31E05.
There’s no question that an old Lada Niva, an old Volkswagen Beetle and an old MGB GT are endlessly more interesting than (and amazingly just as easy to insure as) that second-hand Corsa.
The real question was whether these interesting old barrels would survive a ‘so you just got your driver’s license’ road trip to the Cornish coast. A trip that consisted of essentials such as quarry driving, paint bombs and ‘playing a driving instructor’ by a trio of recently graduated seventeen-year-olds. The other key question: why aren’t all cars equipped with full dual controls as standard? You can also see Chris Harris (somewhere other than the Cornish coast) in the Lamborghini Miura.
TopGear S31E05 is the last episode of this season. You can see him tonight at 9pm on BBC One.
