Would rosemary infusions be effective for living longer in good health? Researchers at the University of California at San Diego are conducting a study to establish the benefits of rosemary.
Researchers from the University of California San Diego School of Medicine (United States) will conduct a study with scientists from the University of Rome La Sapienza (Italy) to study 300 residents of the village of Acciaroli in Italy, all of which had the distinction of being a hundred years old. In addition to living very long, the population of this village has always been known for a low rate of cardiovascular illnesses and of Alzheimer’s disease.
Rosemary elixir of old age?
These locals have always favored a Mediterranean diet rich in rosemary infusion and long hikes in rugged nature.
“The goal of this long-term study is to find out why this group of 300 people live so long by doing a comprehensive genetic analysis and looking at lifestyle habits, like diet and exercise,” Alan said. Maisel, San Diego researcher and professor of medicine in the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine. “The results of the study of the longevity of this group could be applied anywhere in the world.”
For the study, scientists will collect blood samples and distribute questionnaires to 300 participants over the next six months.
The study will also include tests to examine metabolism, genome, cognitive dysfunctions, and protein biomarkers for the risk of cardiac disease, Alzheimer’s disease, kidney disease and the Cancer.
“This project will not only help to understand some of the secrets of healthy aging, but forge closer links with researchers around the world, which will lead to improved clinical care in our aging population”, concludes Salvatore DiSomma, principal Italian researcher and professor of emergency medicine at the University of Rome la Sapienza.
