If you like hide and seek with cockroaches, this article is for you. The story takes place in India where a woman residing in the state of Tamil Nadu (south of the country) felt an unpleasant sensation behind her eyes upon waking up. The 42-year-old patient wasted no time in going to a local clinic where she had a nasal wash. After the procedure was completed, she was sent home.
Except that over the days, the pain persisted. And it wasn’t until a specialist examined his nasal canals with an endoscope that an original host was discovered. “I saw small paws moving inside,” said Dr MN Shankar, of the Chennai School of Medicine (capital of the state of Tamil Nadu), in comments reported by Agence France -Press (AFP).

Deciding to deepen his research, his suspicions were then confirmed: “I realized that I was in fact observing the posterior of a cockroach,” he recalls with horror. Unheard of for this doctor who nevertheless has 30 years of practice behind him. However, he confided that in the medical literature cockroaches had already been extracted, but other patient orifices … The cockroach had in this specific case entered through the nostrils of the woman during her sleep and had advanced so well that ‘ it was almost at the base of the skull.
The clandestine host was eventually extracted from the patient’s nose using forceps and a suction device. When it came out, the insect wriggled and was still very much alive. Dr Shankar told reporters that if the cockroach had remained in his patient’s head it would likely have died, which could have resulted in a potentially very serious infection.
