Think you are a risk drinker? To find out, try the alcoholmeter posted online by the National Institute for Prevention and Health Education (INPES). You will be able to assess your alcohol consumption and benefit from personalized advice from professionals.
“The alcoholmeter is intended for at-risk drinkers and not for people already alcohol-dependent,” said Viet Nguyen-Thanh, researcher at the health agency.
An at-risk drinker has more than two drinks per day
According to Viet Nguyen-Thanh, the at-risk drinker consumes more than the maximum recommended amounts, i.e. two glasses of wine per day for a woman and three glasses for a man.
In order to assess how this tool works, a study was carried out among 339 at-risk drinkers divided into two groups. Those who had used the alcoholmeter were able to reduce their weekly intake by 3.3 drinks at the end of a six-week follow-up, compared to a drop of 1.2 drinks in the control group.
12 questions to assess your alcohol consumption
The alcoholmeter, available on the website Alcohol Info Service, invites you to answer 12 questions designed to assess whether your consumption is low-risk, risky or whether addiction is anticipated. After having checked the various answers, you obtain the profile to which you correspond.
Then, information is given on a case-by-case basis (health risks, equivalent of your consumption in number of bottles of Whiskey, in calories…) and advice is offered via a personalized online help program. The latter analyzes your habits and proposes, if you feel the need, targets for reducing your consumption.
Remember that in the short term, alcohol increases the risk of accidents and violence, and in the longer term, it can lead to liver problems and cardiovascular as well as disturbances in attention, concentration and memory.
