At a time when medical scandals are on the increase (Mediator, Guardazil papillomavirus vaccine, etc.), few patients find themselves in the flood of information available. In the hope of giving them wise advice, four medical professors publish ” The truth about your medications », A collection informed by the point of view of 28 specialists.
Available from Thursday in bookstores, this block of 589 pages aims to explain several pathologies to patients and how drugs work to treat them. The philosophy and major interest of the book is thus summarized by RFI health journalist Claire Hédon, who interviewed the 32 experts quoted in the book: “” It is important for a patient to seek to understand his pathology and the functioning of his drugs, if he does not wish to treat himself “idiot” “.
Among the thorny issues mentioned in the book, the famous Statins prescribed to 5 million French people, the electronic cigarette or even the dangerousness or not of vaccines.
While this book does not claim to be a guide for the patient, it takes stock of medical advances, scientific knowledge and often unrecognized contraindications around drugs. About thirty diseases were scrutinized, including Alzheimer’s, osteoporosis, diabetes or even hypertension.
To legitimize their “truth”, the authors assure that they “gathered people of confidence to make this book”. “At 32, we take less risk of saying nonsense than when we are alone”, underlines in particular François Chast, one of the four professors of medicine cited by the site Why actor. Each subject was duly analyzed and debated before being put on paper, after each specialist had given his informed opinion. As for the style, it seems that the authors preferred to play the card of clarity and frankness, even if they risk turning their backs on certain patients and doctors. Homeopathy is therefore strongly criticized there, since none of the experts “grants the slightest pharmacological property” to this medical approach. Conversely, the anti-vaccine trend is considered dangerous by the authors, since, according to them, it is based on irrational arguments.
