Parisian stations are bad for our hearts! Indeed, heart attacks occur five times more often in these places than in busy tourist places.
Inserm researchers conducted a study to geolocate all cardiac arrests that have occurred over 10 years in Paris in public places. The purpose of this survey was to determine the most useful locations for cardiac defibrillators.
During this period, 1,255 cardiac arrests occurred on the public highway, were identified.
The results of the study show that “there is a strong association with going to a place, that is, the number of people who pass there in the course of a day. And five places stand out in particular: the five main Parisian stations. Thus, less than 1% of the city’s surface area concentrates nearly 20% of the total number of cardiac arrests ”.
“The Parisian stations represent areas at risk of cardiac arrest”, according to Eloi Marijon cardiologist and electrophysiologist and responsible for this work. “We should therefore strengthen the presence of defibrillators in these places rather than trying to homogenize it in all districts of the capital. And of course, we must continue to make the general public aware of the use of these devices which are still too rarely used in the event of a problem, ”he recalls.
Indeed, 40% of witnesses present during a cardiac arrest and in the presence of a defibrillator do not dare to use this object for fear and lack of training. But if you are in possession of or near a defibrillator do not hesitate to act, because even if you make a false diagnosis, you do not put the person in danger. And if you intervene, within minutes of the cardiac arrest, the subject has a 70% chance of being saved.
