The fifth generation Range Rover is making its revolution with complete discretion. Unlike its competitors who rely on extravagance, it is the champion of simplicity, both outside and inside. Could it be to better surprise us?
The Range Rover, which invented the posh all-terrain recipe in 1970, is being renewed with this fifth generation internally coded L460 and whose marketing is expected in spring 2022. It will take over from the current one, named L405, which was launched in 2012. As the saying goes: you don’t change a winning team, you fine-tune the settings. This precept is verified from a cosmetic point of view with a format and lines that are not upset. However, we note the appearance of headlights and lights refined through a more high-tech light signature.
These, adorned with a million micromirrors, are able to identify up to sixteen objects simultaneously. But the surprise is more at the rear, where vertical and thin lights visually widen the stern of the Range Rover Mk5. On the fenders, subtle ridges are somewhat reminiscent of those of the new Defender. The range gains in harmony and charisma. Land Rover DNA has never been stronger.
Range Rover 5: the king of simplicity
You will understand, everything is played in detail. The door handles are now flush. A gimmick released in the Range Rover family by the Velar, then adopted by the second generation of the Evoque. For the uninitiated, this will also be the benchmark to identify this new Range Rover. The side windows are devoid of wipers,
as on the small premium urban SUV DS 3 Crossback. Finally, the rear quarter window is in one piece, from the door cutout to that of the tailgate. Clean, the design brings a lot of elegance and presence to the king of the SUV, but also a concrete aerodynamic benefit. The 2022 Vintage Range Rover claims a record Cx of 0.30. A great tour de force for such a bulky model.
A 100% electric Range Rover in 2024!
Designed on a new technical platform called MLA (“Modular Longitudinal Architecture”), the Range Rover is ready for total electrification. This version was officially announced by Vincent Bolloré, CEO of Jaguar Land Rover, last February. It will top the range by 2024.

In the meantime, the Range will begin its career classically with six-cylinder in-line diesel engines, as well as a 4.4 l petrol V8 with 530 hp (P 530) spewing its 259 g / km of CO.2.
Range Rover 2022 range on the French market
- D250 L6 diesel engine 3.0 l of 250 hp and 600 Nm
- D350 L6 diesel engine 3.0 l of 350 hp and 700 Nm
- P530 V8 petrol engine 4.4 l of 530 hp and 750 Nm
In 2023, two plug-in hybrid proposals will make amends. Called P440e and P510e, they will benefit from a 105 kW electric motor and a battery with a capacity of 38.2 kWh approved for 100 km of autonomy in electric mode.
“In 2023, two plug-in versions P440e and P510e will be able to run 100 km in electric mode.“
Cautious, the leaders of the mark indicate a real range of 80 km. Orders have only just opened on the French market, where deliveries will take place in spring 2022. The range of Range Rover 2022 price will be between 122,600 and 173,700 €.
Fewer screens on the front
On board, the Range Rover remains a haven of choice for screens. However, the latter have not multiplied for all that. Quite the contrary. From one generation to the next, a slab has been left behind. There are only two left. The first, with a diagonal of 13.7 inches, faces the driver. The second, 13.4-inch tactile, is elegantly placed on the dashboard. Its vast surface finally covers that of the two superimposed screens of the old version. Ergonomics gain a lot.
Just below, a physical interface has been retained for the air conditioning, with direct access, while on the storm doors there are touch controls used to operate the ambient lighting and side blinds at the rear. A setting similar to that of the night table interfaces in the rooms of certain luxury hotels.
A sanctuary of tranquility
To travel in princely comfort, all parasitic noise has been erased. The slightest vibration from the engine and the tires no longer disturbs the tranquility of the passenger compartment. The miracle happens with a frequency of 1 kHz broadcast by the pair of speakers concealed in each headrest. They are part of the thirty-five high fidelity speakers lining the interior of the vehicle. And for the health safety of Range Rover occupants, an air purifier will relentlessly hunt down bacteria and viruses.
The robbery, he knows a thing or two about it!
Finally in this cockpit where the electronic assistants, more and more numerous, tend towards autonomous driving, the position of the driver is no longer necessarily the best. The latter is however well helped, during maneuvers, by the four-wheel steering which significantly reduces the turning diameter to 10.95 m. It can also count on a battery of cameras offering a 360-degree vision, which even erase the chassis and the body (see photo below) in order to know precisely where you put your wheels.
Tailored for three or, better yet, for two passengers separated by a giant armrest that deploys electrically, the rear seats offer first-class comfort. Nothing is missing. The club table will no doubt remind you of the one on board your private jet.
Range Rover becomes minivan?
Perfect with four or five passengers on board, the Range Rover will now also appreciate at seven. Large families who can afford it will be won over to his cause. Only offered on the long wheelbase version, it is distinguished by a third row of seats. Do not wait for vulgar folding seats, they are real armchairs that can be retracted electrically in 8 seconds in the boot floor. And, since there is no limit to space, the legs can stretch 86.4 cm, while the backrests are tilted 25 degrees (like those in the second row). In addition, to provide good visibility, the seats are raised by 4 cm.
Another configuration is also available with two temporary seats to be placed on the side of the trunk. The ideal solution during a country picnic or more simply a fishing trip. The perfect set to titillate both the stud and the Bentley Bentayga Fly Fishing by Mulliner or its immediate rival, the Rolls Royce Cullinan. The tailgate will shelter you from the rain and play music right above your head via speakers specially installed in the interior trim of the tailgate.
Range Rover 2022 review
Against the grain of always more, the new Range Rover returns to the essentials aesthetically with a formal purity that is a pleasure to see. On board, the brand’s flagship has not given in to the sirens of the proliferation of screens. It offers the ultimate of a technology which knows how to stay in its place and accelerates on the rechargeable hybridization before taking the step of the electric one in 2024. Finally, if it could a time be annoyed, across the Atlantic in particular, by the BMW X7 and Mercedes GLS appealing to large families with their seven seats, the juggernaut is now able to respond. The seven-seater Range Rover is even one step ahead of the Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600, capping at four. A family configuration that will spell the end for the Land Rover Discovery?
