In case of slight curvature, no treatment is necessary. However, the child should be watched very carefully throughout his growth, bearing in mind that bone maturation generally continues until the age of 18. The spine grows the most during the onset of puberty and during the first two years of it. The risk of aggravation is therefore maximum during this period.
In case of greater deformation, a corset may be prescribed by the doctor, in order to prevent the accentuation of the curvature. The spine is then kept straight, but it returns to its original shape as soon as the corset is removed. Finally, the most severe forms, or for which the wearing of the corset has proved ineffective, can be treated surgically.
The scoliotic attitude often has a low origin: inequality of the lower limbs, stiffness or contraction of the hip, bad position on the school benches … But, in all cases, this abnormal curvature disappears when the pelvis is rebalanced. , and therefore when practical solutions are adopted to correct the bad posture.
The schoolbag does not make scoliosis worse!
And all activities remain possible. Neither gymnastics at school, nor any other sport is prohibited. No more than tennis, which does not have a good reputation in this area. At most, certain inappropriate actions can cause pain that physiotherapy can relieve.
If your child does not hold himself well, preventive measures can keep him from pain a few years later. First, teach him to stand correctly, with his spine straight, and to sit with his back well supported: no feet under the buttocks! He is also advised to regularly practice a sport, whatever it is. And then, an essential measure too often forgotten: you have to adapt your desk and seat to your size. Finally, do not hesitate to invest in a good quality satchel, to wear on your back. Make sure that the part in contact with the body is flat and that suitable reinforcements allow a good distribution of the weight.
