This Monday, September 13 begins the vaccine campaign to administer a booster dose of vaccine against Covid-19. Not all are eligible and it is first and foremost nursing home residents who can benefit from it.
The booster shot, for whom?
In order to cope with the fourth wave of the coronavirus epidemic, the High Authority of Health (HAS) recommended last August to inject a booster dose of vaccine. For the time being, only certain categories of the population are concerned, in particular those which were given priority when the vaccination campaign was launched last December. Are concerned:
- people over 65 living at home, those over 80 are preferred;
- residents in nursing homes and long-term care units;
- people who present a very high risk of a severe form of Covid-19 linked to the presence of a pathology or comorbidity;
- those that have been vaccinated with a single dose of Janssen vaccine.
When to get the booster dose? Which vaccine?
In all cases, it is the messenger RNA sera that act as a booster dose. Regardless of the vaccine previously received, the patient will receive either the Spikevax vaccine from Moderna or the Comirnaty serum developed by Pfier / BioNtech laboratories. For people previously vaccinated with any of these vaccines, ” This booster dose should be administered at least 6 months after the complete primary vaccination. For people immunized with the Janssen vaccine, the time limit for the administration of a booster dose is 4 weeks. It is from these times that the level of antibodies seems to decrease in the body, the protection conferred therefore begins to be less effective.
The HAS also recommends, for people eligible for the booster dose of anti-Covid-19 vaccines and the flu vaccine, to ” carry out the concomitant administration of the vaccines against Covid-19 and against seasonal influenza. “
Where to make an appointment?
The nursing homes have organized themselves so that their residents can be vaccinated on site. For others, it is possible to make an appointment at a vaccination center, with your attending physician or online on various platforms such as Doctolib or Santé.fr. Remember that there is a toll-free number set up by the government, the 0800 009 110, open every day of the week from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. This allows you to obtain the coordinates of the center closest to your home.
