Reading in the dark does not cause eye disease. You are not at risk of becoming nearsighted or having glaucoma because, taken by the suspense of your novel, you did not see the night fall. Reading in the dark will strain your eyes more, they blink less, which tires them and causes dry eye. But at most you will have a migraine and these effects will go away quickly.
