The rate among healthcare workers infected with Covid-19 is decreasing, according to the World Health Organization.
The WHO report
Caregivers are generally less affected by Covid-19 than before. Healthcare workers, who have been on the front line since the start of the epidemic, have yet been severely affected. Indeed, the WHO evoked a rate of 14% of infected caregivers, at the global level. This percentage was initially higher than that of the general population. Today, that number has significantly decreased. It is less than 3%. During a virtual press conference, Anne Perrocheau, WHO epidemiologist, informs us that “the proportion of caregivers among newly infected people is steadily declining.” The data were collected in 83 states, mainly European and American, and this decrease also concerns countries in which the virus is actively circulating.
Why has the rate dropped?
This very positive news can be explained by several reasons. When the epidemic began, professionals lacked equipment, especially protection, forcing them to expose themselves to high risks of contamination. Today, they are organized and receive the necessary material. The supply is better for the majority of countries. Also, the nursing staff had time to learn, they are now trained. WHO had published a charter to better protect professionals in the face of the seriousness of the health situation. They are therefore better equipped and armed to take care of patients with Covid-19.
