A young man has been hospitalized since Friday for an invasive meningococcal type C infection. He comes from the entourage of the victim who died Thursday. His days are not in danger, however.
Following the death Thursday of the young pharmacist from Nancy, 27, who died of lightning meningitis, one of his acquaintances affected by the same type of invasive type C meningococcal infection, had to be hospitalized urgently on Thursday morning. Taken in charge at the Nancy CHRU, this 28-year-old young man was put on treatment with antibiotics. In a statement released Friday evening, the regional health agency (ARS) of Lorraine said the patient “is doing well”. Several people who were in “close contact” with the other young man who died Thursday had already been identified and treated with antibiotics. “People who have had close contact with this new patient are being identified” and “will be put on treatment,” said the ARS, which is however reassuring.
A toll-free number
“Meningococcus is a fragile germ that is transmitted from one person to another, during direct contact (face to face), close (less than a meter) and prolonged or repeated (kisses, intimate relations …) », Recalls the ARS. In other words, “meningococcus does not survive outside the human body; it does not stay in the air or on objects. (…) There is therefore very little risk of transmission of meningococcus during gatherings or going to supermarkets, in public transport, at the cinema, in a queue… ”, insists the Regional Health Agency. A toll-free number (0800 255 025) has nevertheless been set up by the ARS and the Nancy CHRU “for people who think they have been in close contact with the patient”.
