Two associations lodged a complaint on September 23 with the constitution of civil party against two prefects (from the Brittany region and Côtes-d’Armor), after the death, on September 8, of a runner 50 years old.
The reason for his death according to them: the rotting green algae present in themouth of the Gouessant, in the Côtes-d’Armor. For the associations, the prefects have deliberately endangered the lives of users taking this path by not removing the algae.
Extremely dangerous green algae
The green algae can they really kill? The toxicity of these decomposing algae has been proven since 2010, in particular through reports from the National Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health Safety (ANSES) and the National Institute for the Environment. industry and risks (Ineris).
In 2010 and 2011, ANSES pointed out the risks associated with gaseous emissions from decomposing green algae for the health of populations, as well as the toxicity of these emissions in animals.
Further research on green algae
The toxicity of this rotting mass is very high and the resulting hydrogen sulphide emissions can be fatal.
However, additional research will be carried out to clearly explain the death of the jogger and the responsibility of the Breton algae.
