Seven years of pain, consultations, scans or ultrasounds that lead nowhere. For 7 years, Nelson, a 22-year-old order picker, saw doctors about 20 times with pain radiating to his right side and arm. But each time the same diagnosis: “you have nothing, it’s muscular”… Yet the pains were sometimes so severe that they prevented him from working.
Doctors think of pulmonary embolism, then liver infection
Until May 23, when, seized with violent vomiting, he asked his partner to take him to the Orsay hospital. After a night of observation, the doctors are thinking of pulmonary embolism and place it on anticoagulants. But after 48 hours, the diagnosis changes: it would be a liver infection, probably due to the presence of a parasitic worm.
The young man was then sent to the Kremlin-Biceter hospital (Val-de-Marne), specializing in tropical diseases.
A pipe forgotten during an appendicitis operation
Thinking of detecting the worm on an X-ray, doctors instead found a straight foreign body like an i, about 25 cm. Nelson then made the link with a surgical operation he had undergone 7 years earlier at the Orsay hospital.
A drain left in his abdomen after appendicitis operation, ended up piercing organs.
After another 3 hour operation, the plastic tube was removed. Orsay Hospital asked to meet with Nelson, who refused. He plans to take legal action for medical error.
