There is a link between baldness, white hair and heart health, according to a recent British study. This publication could lead to better management of certain patients presenting these signs at an early stage.
Study compares the appearance of gray hair with the occurrence of heart problems
Is the health of your hair a mirror of your heart health? This is what British researchers from the European Society of Cardiology seem to believe who, in a recent study, shed light on the link between the early onset of gray hair or baldness, and the risk of later developing coronary heart disease.
To support this theory, the authors of this study asked 2,000 men to participate in a study. Of these, 790 were under 40 and had heart problems. Their health was carefully analyzed, as was the condition of their hair, and this data was then compared.
Early baldness will no longer be taken lightly
Scientists then found that almost 50% of men who suffered from heart problems also experienced early baldness or white hair, while this figure fell to around 30% in healthy men.
The authors of this study have not fully clarified the mystery of this link but raise different hypotheses. ” One of the possible reasons would be that the biological aging process, which would be faster in some, could result in a change in the nature of the hair. », Explains Kamal Sharma, co-author of this publication. The hormonal track is also studied and scientists are now continuing their research which could lead to better medical care for patients with signs as harmless as the appearance of baldness or salt and pepper hair.
