According to an Odoxa study for the Fédération Hospitalière de France, revealed by the Sunday Newspaper, very many surgical operations would be completely unnecessary.
Disparities by region
How many times have we heard: ” I was urged to give birth by cesarean section when I could have given birth vaginally “? The number of unnecessary surgeries like this would be very large. This is in any case what reveals a study of the Hospital Federation of France. According to this work, there are real disparities according to the departments. Herniated discs are operated on more often in the South-East than in the Paris region, for example.
Another example: in the Landes, Haute-Corse or Vienne, there are 149 cesarean sections per 100,000 inhabitants, when there are 308 in the Aisne, in Yvelines or in the Alpes-Maritimes. Furthermore, more Caesarean sections would be scheduled in the private sector than in the public. It is difficult to determine if this is due to the pressure of women or the greed of surgeons, but the facts are there.
A colossal financial impact
You should also know that hospitals are paid according to the number of operations and medical procedures they perform. This logic therefore pushes certain establishments to perform perfectly useless operations, such as coronary bypass surgery, spinal surgery, insertion of a coronary or vascular stent (small spring), or even lens surgery.
In the end, according to this study, 9 out of 10 doctors admit to prescribing unjustified acts or examinations. Practices that would cost 50 billion euros each year. This scandal has been denounced several times and the Minister of Health, Agnès Buzyn, has already indicated that she will tackle the problem. According to her, 30% of health insurance expenses are due to unnecessary acts. To be continued…
