October 24, 2013 – Because cancer still claims too many victims (more than 355,000 new cases and 150,000 deaths estimated in 2012, the Institut Curie is organizing a solidarity event against cancer, unprecedented in France. Called “La Marche of the Enlightenment ”, it will fund innovative research programs in the field of personalized medicine, a great hope in the fight against cancer.
“In the age of personalized medicine, the search for new treatments comes at a very high cost. We are therefore counting on everyone’s generosity to advance our bet: to cure as many people as possible ” explains Hélène Bongrain, Director of Resource Development at Institut Curie, a major player in cancer care and the leading French cancer research center.
A more innovative collection
Since April 23, “ambassadors” – people involved with Institut Curie for several years, former patients or activists involved in the fight against cancer – have pledged to collect a minimum of 100 euros each by mobilizing their entourage. To facilitate the process, an interactive and innovative collection system, which can be relayed on social networks such as Facebook and on the Internet, has been set up.
The operation will end on November 23 at 6 p.m. with a light walk of 4 km on the Champ de Mars in Paris. Hundreds of luminous balloons, symbols of hope in the fight against cancer, worn by ambassadors from the Institut Curie and many anonymous, will advance through the night at the foot of the Eiffel Tower in a lively and warm atmosphere.
