October 12, 2000 – Some facts about the penetration of alternative and complementary health approaches in the United Kingdom:
- Twenty years ago there were 13,500 complementary medicine practitioners in the UK; there are now 40,000.
- Over the past two years, the number of medical schools offering courses in complementary approaches has increased by 50%: 15 of 23 medical schools now offer a course in “complementary medicine”.
- More than 16% of general practitioners in England practice at least one of the complementary approaches themselves and more than 40% of their offices provide access to some form of alternative approach.
- Over 70% of these treatments are covered by Medicare.
- In homes for the elderly and pain clinics, the penetration of alternative and complementary approaches is almost total since 90% of these establishments include them in their regular treatment protocols.
