Periods are a natural process that most women still feel uncomfortable with. While a photo of photographer Rupi Kaur was deleted from the network because she was lying in bed with a blood stain from your period next to her, the taboo of the female cycle returns to the front of the stage.
On July 21, the American artist Saint Hoax decided to take a stand on the subject. Its goal ? Dissociate this natural cycle from the feeling of shame that too often accompanies it. She posted on her account Instagram images of Snow White, Ariel from the Little Mermaid and Aurora from Sleeping Beauty, each with a bloodstain from their periods.
Say it with Princesses
To get this message across, no better spokesperson than our childhood heroines. They are perfect women, with incredible fates, who have found their prince charming, and yes, they also have their period. The artist’s message: it happens to all women, it’s something natural and shame has nothing to do with the equation ( stomach cramps are more than enough!).
After using the world of Disney to denounce violence against women, rape or even incest, it is the story of a friend of the artist who inspired this new theme. The young woman had been rejected by a man because of a bloodstain. After apologizing, she received a rather humiliating message: “How can I date a girl who doesn’t know what a tampon is?”.
What outraged Saint Hoax the most about this story was the fact that her friend felt compelled to apologize for something so natural. She wants to put an end to the ignorance and shame around this subject. Having grown up in a family largely made up of girls, she quickly integrated and understood the female cycle. “Girls have their period once a month. And sometimes it leaves traces. But that’s how it is,” explains the artist on his Instagram account.
