“Four years ago I had breast cancer.” On the occasion of the month of Pink October mobilization, Carla Bruni surprised everyone by announcing on Instagram that she had suffered from breast cancer. “Surgery, radiotherapy, hormonal therapy, I follow the usual path to treat this type of cancer”, she says, parading signs in front of the camera.
Breast cancer: “have your mammograms every year”
“But I was lucky, my breast cancer was not yet aggressive, because it did not have time to become so. Because every year, on the same date, I have a mammogram. If I hadn’t done that, I wouldn’t have a left breast today.” the singer still testifies.
“If I am making this post, it is not to give you the details of my health. This repels me and I hesitated for a long time before speaking,” specifies the singer. “If I make this post, it is to deliver a single message to you: have your mammograms every year, it is about your life,” concludes the former First Lady.
Breast cancer: how is screening organized in France?
The national organized breast cancer screening program is aimed at French women aged 50 to 74. “It allows the early detection and treatment of these cancers, thus increasing the chances of cure. It is estimated that in 2015, the annual number of deaths from breast cancer avoided in France was 3,059 with a participation rate to organized screening of 51.6%”, the HAS (High Authority of Health) recently clarified.
This screening consists of carrying out, every two years, a clinical breast examination as well as a digital mammogram (2D). “The device which allows this examination to be carried out is low in radiation and complies with health and safety standards. The organized screening provides for a systematic second reading of mammograms for which no abnormality has been detected”, specifies the health authority.
12,000 deaths per year in France due to breast cancer
With more than 12,000 deaths per year in France, breast cancer remains the leading cause of cancer death in women, despite a clear improvement in the 5-year survival rate over the last ten years (estimated at 87% for women diagnosed between 2010 and 2015).
