Doctor Fatima Fahs, an American dermatologist, gave an update on the various factors responsible for dark circles, other than lack of sleep.

In an interview with Newsweek, Doctor Fatima Fahs, a dermatologist in Michigan (United States), indicated that smoking is a factor favoring the appearance of dark circles. Smoking cigarettes reduces facial elasticity and can lead to premature thinning and aging of the skin under the eyes.

In some cases, a diet with a high salt content can increase water retention and therefore lead to dark circles. Better to avoid ultra-processed foods that contain large amounts of salt.
Dark circles can also be signs of underlying diseases. This is particularly the case with thyroid disorders, anemia or iron deficiency. “Thyroid diseases and certain medications can cause bags under the eyes due to water retention (…) Anemia can trigger dark circles under the eyes, because the body is not able to fully oxygenate the eyes. tissues and the skin therefore appears darker”said Dr. Fatima Fahs.
Last cause responsible for dark circles: aging. With age, the skin slackens and thins. The vessels under the skin become more and more visible and promote these dark spots in the eyes. Some people are also genetically predisposed to having dark circles.
What are the tricks to get rid of bags under the eyes?
