Pharmacist Sonja Keizers answers
Pharmacist Sonja Keizers answers questions about medicines. This time: is mouth spray bad for the teeth?
Because I suffer from a dry mouth, I use a mouth spray. Isn’t this bad for the teeth?
Reply:
Not treating a dry mouth in any case it is bad for the teeth. Saliva protects the teeth and molars. It contains enzymes that kill bacteria and it prevents the oral cavity from becoming too acidic. In addition to tooth decay, a dry mouth causes a bad taste, bad breath and gum disease. So every reason to do something about it. A spray or gel with artificial saliva can provide relief. Please note that the product does not contain irritating substances such as alcohol, menthol or chlorhexidine. These substances actually make the mouth drier. Some mouth sprays contain sugar as a flavoring. These are of course not suitable either. What can also help is sugar-free chewing gum, this stimulates the salivary glands. Ask your dentist or pharmacist for advice on which product is best. Also take a critical look at the medicines you are taking. That may be the cause of the problem.
Also send in your medicine question. That’s possible here.
