According to an American study, the magnets incorporated in the iPad 2 can deactivate a defibrillator, if they are brought too close to the chest.
When iPad and defibrillator don’t mix. Indeed, according to an American study presented at the 2013 Heart Rythm Society congress by Gianna Chien, the two internal magnets of the iPad 2, intended to fix the cover on the tablet, are powerful enough to deactivate the defibrillators implanted in patients. .
The study involved 26 patients implanted by an automatic implantable defibrillator (ICD), as well as 4 patients with a pacemaker, and one patient with an implantable loop recorder. For these last two devices, no interference with the iPad 2 was observed, regardless of the distance. In patients with a defibrillator, on the other hand, the iPad stuck to the chest disables 30% of the devices while at normal reading distance, the researchers found no problem.
Scientists therefore advise users not to fall asleep with the iPad 2 against their chest. Moreover, the instructions for the iPad 2 already include a warning on this subject.
The company Medtronic, specializing in medical technologies specifies in a press release, that this study “reminds patients to remain vigilant on new technologies and their accessories, and to maintain a minimum distance of 15 cm between the tablet and the implanted device” .
