In an article published by the Decoders on the World website, the main causes of death between 1994 and 2015 were identified. They come from a study by CépiDC, an organization of the National Institute of Health and Medical Research (Inserm) which collects all deaths that have occurred in France.
What are the 10 main causes of death in France since 1994? The researchers isolated: the circulatory system (ex: infarction), tumors and cancers, the respiratory system (ex: pneumonia), accidents, digestive system (ex: ulcer), endocrine, nutritional and metabolic diseases, nervous system (ex : Parkinson), suicides, genito-urinary system and a share of abnormal, unclassified results.
Fewer deaths from AIDS
Over the years, we realize that people are dying less of AIDS: 4,800 deaths in 1994 compared to 300 in 2016. Road accidents tend to be less important in the causes of death: from 8,500 people there are 25 years, to 3,448 in 2016.
The study points out that contrary to global figures, heart disease is not the leading cause of death in France. It is rather cancers, which have imposed themselves on this place over the years. This does not prevent, moreover, that mortality due to cancer gradually decreases.
Lung cancers are increasing in women, +39% between 2002 and 2013. In terms of pancreatic tumors, in 1994 there were 14.2 deaths out of 100,000 people compared to 17.08 in 2016. Finally, Alzheimer’s causes more and more death.
