Compared to non-practitioners, BDSM enthusiasts have fewer sexual problems and report being more sexually satisfied, a new study reveals.
French women are the least sexually fulfilled in Europe, according to a investigation of the FIFG published in December. Sexual well-being is strongly linked to practices, and not all are created equal. According to a study published in February in the Journal of Sexual Medicinelovers of BDSM (bondage, discipline, sadomasochism) would be more sexually fulfilled than average.
BDSM in question
Brought up to date by the film Fifty Shades of grey, BDSM is a sexual practice based on domination and submission. Sexual relations are a kind of role-playing game of variable duration, based on physical and psychological practices.
More fulfillment for dominants and those who alternate
The study, carried out by Italian researchers, mobilized 266 male and female participants, practitioners of BDSM as well as a control group of 200 people. Each person had to answer questionnaires on their sexual practices and their fulfillment. The researchers first looked at the distribution of roles among BDSM practitioners: the men are often the dominant ones and the women the dominated ones, even if a third of the participants claim to alternate roles. It is precisely the latter, and the dominants, who declare the greatest sexual satisfaction in comparison to the dominated and the non-practitioners of BDSM.
Scientists have also found that going after your fantasies in BDSM leads to greater overall satisfaction and fewer sexual problems.
Better in their head
In 2013, another group of researchers took an interest in these sexual practices. They conducted a comparative analysis on the psychology of BDSM practitioners. Their findings indicate that the latter are more outgoing, less neurotic and generally feel better, compared to non-practitioners. As surprising as they may be, these practices are not the consequence of psychological disorders, the scientists conclude.
