Fans of electronic cigarettes are more affected by cardiovascular and coronary diseases and by depression than non-vapers.
Two arguments push smokers to swap tobacco for electronic cigarettes: cost and health. If it is undeniable that vaping is more economical than buying packs of cigarettes – in France in any case – the impact on health is not yet certain. The electronic cigarette is recent, it has appeared and has become more popular in recent years.
According to one study unveiled on March 7 in the United States, and which will be presented during the 68th Congress of the American College of Cardiologyvapers suffer from heart disease more often than non-vapers.
34% more heart attacks
This is one of the largest studies to date on the subject. It relates to a national survey of 96,467 people in 2014, 2016 and 2017. According to the researchers’ observations, electronic cigarette enthusiasts are 34% more likely to have a heart attack than non-vapers. “Until now, little was known about cardiovascular events related to e-cigarette use,” comments Dr. Mohinder Vindhyal, lead author of the study. “These data must be a warning signal and trigger action and awareness of its dangers.” In addition, vapers are 25% more likely to have coronary heart disease, that is, which affects the arteries, and are 55% more likely to suffer from depression and anxiety.
Results obtained by taking into account known cardiovascular risk factors, such as age, sex, body mass index (BMI), hypercholesterolemia, hypertension and smoking. After adjusting for these criteria, it appeared that the risks of cerebrovascular accidents (CVA), high blood pressure and circulatory problems were equal in vapers and non-vapers.
Vaping, an effective means of smoking cessation
On the other hand, the risks in tobacco smokers are much higher than in non-smokers. It is important to note that this study is an observational study. It does not establish a causal link between electronic cigarettes and these health problems.
According to health barometer of Public Health France dating from 2015, 6% of 15-75 year olds currently vape. E-cigarettes are an effective way to quit smoking. According to A try conducted by Queen Mary University of London, vaping is almost twice as effective in quitting smoking as other nicotine replacement products, such as patches, chewing gum and vaporizers. The study, published last February and involving 886 smokers, reveals that 18% of electronic cigarette users had quit smoking one year after the trial, while only 9.9% of those who used the other alternatives had arrived there. In France, 73,000 deaths each year are linked to tobacco addiction.
