Cancers, mental health and suicide, premature mortality does not spare men. The Movember Foundation collects donations in an original way.
“Our mustache is our ribbon. In November, grow the Mustache and use it to raise donations for men’s health. This is the message launched by the participants in the Movember challenge organized for a month. For the next 30 days, the men will grow their fleece while maintaining it. So hipsters have a head start…
On its website, the Movember Foundation presents itself as the only charity fighting for men’s health on a global scale. It tackles some of the most serious health issues facing men. And the list goes on: prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health and suicide prevention. With more than 11,000 deaths and 200,000 attempts per year, it should be noted that France is particularly affected by the latter. And the rate of this premature mortality is particularly high among men.
542 million collected
And the results are there. Over the past 13 years, the association has raised 542 million euros for men’s health, making it possible to fund more than 1,200 projects worldwide. Among them, a study funded by the Movember Foundation has delivered its first results. Half of the risk of testicular cancer is attributable to genes inherited from the family.
And the Mo Bros and Mo Sistas (the people who support the event) don’t intend to stop there. By 2030, they want to reduce the number of premature deaths affecting men by 25%.
This year, the Movember phenomenon continues: in France alone, there are already nearly 230,000 registered users on the site. Movember France. To make a donation you can also click on the following link: https://fr.movember.com/donate
Original and sporting challenges
Besides the financial aspect, original actions are also welcome during the next weeks. In 2014 in the United States, a young woman disguised as a nurse had the original idea of palpating the testicles of passers-by to make them aware of cancer of the genital glands.
This maneuver, certainly strange, pursued a nevertheless very serious goal: to raise awareness among men of testicular cancer. At each palpation, the “Youtubeurs” donated $100 to the Movember Foundation.
Finally, like last year, the Movember campaign emphasizes the inactivity of men. Participants of both sexes are therefore encouraged to identify a sporting challenge called “Move” precisely to remedy this. It is still a question of practicing physical activity every day, until the end of November.
In France, less than one in two men practices sport on a regular basis. However, this sedentary lifestyle can be the cause of serious illnesses, in particular cardiovascular pathologies, cancers or obesity…
