A survey conducted for the association Axa Prévention by Elabe and relayed by Le Parisien became interested in women’s health in France. It gathered the answers of 1324 women and 1181 men on their habits of consultation with the doctor. Whether they are regular for a control follow-up, punctual in case of illness or for their loved ones… The results are worrying: three out of four women neglect their health.
Heal others before healing yourself
Women tend to start by trying to take care of themselves when they are sick. 85% of them testify to this (compared to 78% of men). Go to the doctor for treatment, yes, but as a last resort explain it 70% of them. This also applies to check-ups, such as gynecologists, which only one woman in two consults regularly. After pregnancies, around 40-50 years old, the appointments are spaced out even more (up to 8 years).
On the other hand, when it comes to taking care of loved ones, they do not hesitate to go to the doctor. They are 71% to have answered not to miss any medical appointment in this case. This discrepancy could be explained by the evolution of women professionally, without a reduction in the time devoted to the family and the home. The survey reveals that only 3% of men consider themselves responsible for the medical follow-up of their children. Women, they are 57% to testify.
To be sick, you still have to have time
Le Parisien recalls that the 2020 Insee survey revealed that women still spent 3 and a half hours every day cleaning their homes. One of the explanations for not taking care of their health lies partly in their lack of time… Every 24 hours they accumulate their existence as mothers, workers and caretakers of the home.
In an interview, Le Parisien collected the analysis of Claire Mounier Vehier, cardiologist at the Lille University Hospital, who explains that her patients are under a lot of stress and believe ” not being able to afford to be sick so much they have to do. Telework has also accentuated this phenomenon by making them all the more vulnerable as they tend to exercise less, have less calm and have a less rich social life.
