Sixteen hair dyes were studied by the magazine 60 million consumers. Some contain allergens or even carcinogenic components.
Hair dye manufacturers have room for improvement. The magazine 60 million consumers evaluated the composition of 16 such products: only six of them are acceptable. The file appeared in the new issue of the magazine, on newsstands since Thursday, December 27.
For its comparison, 60 million consumers gathered representative products from the market. Almost all of them are effective, but some compositions are questionable. Of the 16 hair colors, only six are retained by the magazine, the others are excluded from the ranking in view of their poor results.
allergens and carcinogens
Several allergens have been listed by the magazine: paraphenylenediamine (PPD), resorcinol and p-aminophenol. The concentration levels do not exceed the thresholds authorized by the regulations. But this is not satisfactory for the magazine which recalls that resorcinol is suspected of being an endocrine disruptor by the Environmental Protection Agency and p-aminophenol is classified in the list of molecules “suspected of causing genetic defects” by the European Union.
All brands are affected
The big brands are not spared from bad ratings: Garnier, Franck Provost Paris, Herbatint have been rejected by 60 million consumers. The magazine validates certain colors such as “Natural chestnut” from Aroma Zone or even a color with plant extracts from Koores. Natural coloring does not necessarily mean a healthy product, the article reminds us that certain natural products can be toxic.
Disfigured by coloring
Last November, a woman told in the Parisian how a hair dye had disfigured her. The 19-year-old woman had an allergic reaction to one of the components of the dye: PPD. After a stay in the hospital, her face returned to its normal shape. The young woman had not followed the precautionary measures to the letter, but in a Facebook post, her mother regretted that the warnings were not clearer. 2 to 3% of the population in France is allergic to PPD, without necessarily knowing it.
