The ANSM has observed a 43% drop in sales of 3rd and 4th generation pills and a 34% increase in 2nd generation oral contraceptives.
Doctors no longer seem to prescribe this type of pill. The share of prescriptions for 1st and 2nd generation contraceptives compared to those for COCs of 3rd and 4th generation is currently 73% and -27%.
Pill and pulmonary embolism
The results of the study carried out by the National Health Insurance Fund for Health Workers (Cnamts) with the ANSM on the risks of the different generations of COCs and involving more than 4 million women, are made public. They confirm the existence of a doubling of the risk of pulmonary embolism with 3rd generation COCs compared to those of 2nd generation.
This trend observed in the reduction of prescriptions for 3rd and 4th generation pills and the transfer to 2nd generation contraceptives with the lowest estrogen doses is good news. Patients and doctors follow ANSM recommendations and take into consideration the proven risks of taking the 3rd and 4th generation pill.
