In 95% of cases, babies born by medically assisted procreation are the result of intra-marital gamete donation.
The French, who cannot have children, have the possibility of resorting to medically assisted procreation (Amp) to carry out their parental project. 141,000 attempts of which were carried out in the 104 centers and 23,127 babies were thus born in 2011, according to the latest report from the Biomedicine Agency. They represent 2.8% of total births.
In the vast majority of cases (95%), Amp is intramarital, that is to say it is performed with the gametes of both couples. Infertile couples, on the other hand, must call on donors to compensate for the deficits of the woman or the man.
1307 babies were born in 2011 thanks to the donation of gametes. 402 women donated their oocytes, which represents a 13% increase in new donors. “Egg donation, explains the Biomedicine Agency, which was still poorly understood until recently, is gradually developing with the media coverage of the need (…) and the communication efforts led by the Biomedicine Agency”. But it would have taken 900 donors to respond to the 1806 requesting couples.
In men, “the decline in sperm donation is worrying,” notes the Agency. The different centers welcomed 233 new donors in 2011 against 306 the previous year. The Biomedicine Agency decided to carry out “with the professionals of the AMP a global reflection on the possible actions in order to improve the situation”.
