Obesity is a plague that continues to wreak havoc on the world. And France is not spared by the phenomenon. As European Obesity Day approaches, Tuesday 23 May, the OECD (Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development) takes stock of overweight and obesity in its 2017 Global Obesity Report.
Main lesson: Nearly one in five adults is obese in OECD countries, according to figures reported by Europe 1. By 2030, one in two adults could even be affected by this “epidemic” of obesity, if the current dynamics continue. In France, there are 15% of obese people. With this rate, France is in the middle of a scale on which the United States dominates with more than 38.2% of obese adults, followed by Mexico (34.2%). Next come New Zealand (30.7%) and Hungary (30%).
A rising forecast for obesity in France
At the low end of this ranking are Japan, India and South Korea with 3.7%, 5% and 5.3% respectively. France is still relatively far from the American situation, the OECD estimates that within a few years it should approach it: the obesity rate could reach 21% of the adult population in 2030.
According to the World Health Organization, being overweight is a body mass index (BMI) equal to or greater than 25. Obesity is equivalent to a BMI equal to or greater than 30.
