According to the WHO (World Health Organization), about 70% of men and 80% of women suffer from headaches occasionally or repeatedly. Most often not serious but nevertheless painful, these pains appearing in the skull are generally tension headaches, migraines (not diagnosed two out of three times) or mixed headaches, combining the two.
Why do we have a headache?
The causes of headaches are diverse and can be related to stress, PMS, hypertension, or eye strain. But also to excess alcohol or coffee, tobacco, pollution, sleep or thyroid problems, overuse of drugs. One study even found that chewing gum could cause chronic headaches.
Much more rarely, these sudden pains can herald a stroke or meningitis. For the most frequent headaches, we can limit the risks by adopting a healthy lifestyle and methods to relax. “If, despite everything, the seizures persist or have an unusual character, it is better to seek the advice of a general practitioner, or even a neurologist”, recommends Doctor Michel Dib, neurologist at the Pitié-Salpêtrière hospital in Paris.
