More than half of seniors do not feel concerned about the risk of addiction. In 2040, nearly 2 million French people will be affected.
In France, seniors are showing optimism. In its national survey, published on Monday, the Médéric Alzheimer Foundation takes stock of the behavior of the French in the face of the risk of loss of autonomy and the possible dependence they could face in the years to come.
Result, 63% of 50-79 are not concerned, but confident. They are even 27% to think that they will never be dependent. And to cope financially, more than half of them rely on their income and 32% want to focus on public aid.
Long-term care insurance costs too much
Faced with the increase in life expectancy and neurodegenerative diseases, the 50-79 year olds are very few to secure financial protection. 77% of them believe that taking out long-term care insurance is far too expensive. And do not wish to pay a membership fee for twenty or even thirty years.
A family matter
Little worried but aware of the risk, seniors prefer to be helped by their spouse: a third of them express this need. Almost half of people believe their families will give them the help they need. But the children are not in the game. Only 4% want to be supported by their children.
As the Foundation indicates, “more than half of the individuals surveyed consider that dependency care should be funded primarily by the State”.
