“We are now exposed to chemicals on a daily basis, yet this exposure remains largely unknown. However, these products have harmful effects on health and the environment, and are implicated in chronic diseases that are sometimes irreversible”. On the occasion of International Women’s Rights Day, the non-governmental organization WECF published a report entitled “Women and chemicals”which calls for strengthening policies to protect against exposure – particularly of women – to chemical pollutants.
This report focuses on the products to which women are exposed through their trades – in the sectors of agriculture, waste, cleaning, or textiles for example. But also at home as simple users, cosmetic products for example.
Faced with chemical pollutants, women are more exposed and therefore more vulnerable than men. However, as the NGO points out, “Despite a growing body of evidence pointing to the irreversible effects of dangerous chemicals causing serious long-term harm to women’s health, and in particular the health of pregnant women and fetuses, virtually no comprehensive studies or communication is not available on this subject. And there is a lack of concrete protection measures in legislation and standards “.
The WECF organization is particularly concerned about endocrine disruptors stressing that “pregnant women and future parents must be better protected and better informed “.
