Like last year, the eyes of future doctors shine for ophthalmology. It remains the most popular specialty. And Nates is popular.
In 2016, medical students entered the era of modernity. They passed the first edition of the computerized national classification tests (ECN), using tablets. And a few days ago la Drees (1) took stock of this competition known to be among the most selective in France.
7,700 students were affected. This promotion is smaller than expected: in 2015, they were 8,500 students to pass the tests. “That year, some of them, anticipating the computerization of the tests, probably preferred to face a known test format rather than using the possibilities allowing to take the ECN the following year”, however puts the Drees into perspective.
The highly prized remunerative “specs”
As for the choices of interns, like last year, the eyes of future doctors shine for ophthalmology. It remains indeed the most popular specialty since these positions are the ones filled the fastest. But to get it, you have to be among the top 30% of students.
More generally, students opt for specialties as a priority. Their mode of exercise is for some mainly liberal (cardiology, radiology, dermatology); for others, such as nephrology, internal medicine and neurology, he is an employee. But all have one thing in common, they are rather among the most profitable …
General medicine in difficulty
At the other end of the ranking, occupational medicine is particularly neglected in 2016 with only 46% of its positions filled, even though the number of positions offered has decreased (from 194 in 2015 to 157 in 2016). Ranked second to last, general medicine still fills 94% of its positions. “She continues to recruit at all ranks of the standings,” notes the Drees.
But the studies of medicine remain ruthless, since more than half of the students are affected in a geographical subdivision which is not where they carried out their second cycle. And among these students, nearly 40% obtained a specialty that their classification would not have enabled them to obtain in their place of training.

Nantes chosen by the interns
Finally in 2016, only six geographic subdivisions filled all of their positions: Aix-Marseille, Antilles-Guyana, Montpellier, Nantes, Nice and the Indian Ocean. The attractiveness indicator constructed, like the one established to classify specialties, shows that Nantes comes first in the choice of interns.
It is followed by Lyon, Montpellier, Rennes, Bordeaux, Toulouse and Paris. Conversely, Limoges, Poitiers, Besançon, Amiens are struggling to attract students. These subdivisions fill 85% to 95% of open positions. In addition, 61% of the students who come to Limoges and 44% of those who are assigned to Amiens could not obtain the specialty obtained in their region of origin.
