The recommendations of the National Medicines Safety Agency (ANSM), which at the end of December 2012 asked doctors to prescribe 1st and 2nd generation pills as first-line pills, have been respected. According to an analysis of data from the company Celtipharm presented this Wednesday by the ANSM, the decline in sales of combined oral contraceptives (COC) by 3th and 4th generation was confirmed throughout last year: -45% in 2013 compared to 2012.

This decrease is also accompanied by a significant increase in the use of 1st and 2nd COCs.th generation: + 30% in one year. “These data confirm that doctors have changed their prescriptions in line with the recommendations sent at the end of December by the Ansm to prescribers”, rejoiced this Wednesday Dominique Maraninchi, Director General of the Agency, at a press conference. .
Result, the current distribution of the consumption of French contraceptive pills is as follows: 1st and 2nd COCs vs 3rd and 4th generations: 78% / 22%
Finally, in 2013, a slight drop in sales of COCs, all generations combined, was observed: -5.1%.

IUD sales have exploded
For other means of contraception, the ANSM observes that since January 2013, an increase in sales of other contraceptives has started. The overall increase observed was 28% in 2013 compared to sales in 2012.
In detail, the Medicines Agency notes that the largest increase, 47%, concerns the sale of copper IUDs, which currently account for more than 40% of sales in the “other devices” category.
In the same trend, the hormonal IUD is also experiencing a boom in sales: + 18% in one year.
