The suicide of a child is always difficult to understand. Although many young people under the age of 12 who die off suffer from depression, a new study published in the journal Pediatrics suggests that the most common cause is actually attention deficit disorder with or without hyperactivity (ADHD).
Almost a third of the 87 children aged 5 to 11 followed for this study between 2003 and 2012 were followed for mental disorders, mainly ADHD. As the group of teenagers followed mainly suffered from depression. Information that may prove useful in helping physicians prevent these tragic events.
The study also shows that it is mainly boys with ADHD who end their life by choosing to strangulate. The researchers want to extend the study to determine the factors associated with this state of affairs.
