Far from the usual clichés, hypnosis is more and more used by doctors. In particular, it helps manage pain and supplement the benefits of certain medications.
Hypnosis enters congress. Far from a sometimes fanciful, even esoteric imagery, it can bring real benefits in the world of health. On the occasion of the congress of the French-speaking Confederation of Hypnosis and Brief Therapies, and of the International Society for Hypnosis, which opens on August 27 in Paris, Why actor takes stock of a discipline that the National Academy of Medicine appears to be “a technique of psychotherapy”.
A natural faculty
The “Hypnosis: Roots and Future of Consciousness” congress prides itself on attracting Porte Maillot (Paris) no less than 2,300 speakers. It must be said that this technique is more and more in demand in medicine. In 2013, the National Academy of Medicine even devoted several pages to it in its report devoted to complementary therapies. “It is more and more widely used”, underline the Academicians.
Hypnosis, “it is first of all a relational approach which allows the subject to draw from him his own resources to manage the painful or psychological discomfort, alongside anything that is medicated. This definition is the Toulouse psychiatrist Léonard Amétépé, contacted by Why actor, which brings it. This specialist likes to compare hypnosis to dropping out in a meeting. “During a hypnosis session, this stall is guided by a therapist. It allows the patient to place himself in this moment of uncertainty during which one can rearrange his way of feeling, of seeing himself, of behaving. “
Dr Léonard Amétépé, psychiatrist at the Clinique d’Aufréry (Toulouse): ” The hypnotic process is the openness that the subject has on his own possibilities. “
Reduce drug doses
The fields of application are broad to say the least: the trials referenced on the PubMed database range from depression to pain management – including in fibromyalgia – to disorders such as ulcerative colitis, colon syndrome irritable or schizophrenia.
An apparent diversity which conceals some common points, as the Academy of Medicine notes: “Under the diversity of diagnostic labels, the goal of treatment is always the control of functional symptoms (…) or of internal organicity disorders. “In practice, the main use of hypnosis remains in pain management,” because many studies have been carried out on this subject “, specifies Léonard Amétépé. It allows in particular to reduce the consumption of drugs.
Dr Léonard Amétépé : ” People who have chronic pain and are over-medicated can reduce dosages and learn self-hypnosis. “
Hypnosis is useful in addition to conventional medicine. This psychiatrist uses it in particular to help schizophrenic patients, stabilized thanks to drugs, to improve their social behavior. “More and more centers are using it for anesthesia during operations,” adds Dr. Amétépé.
This is particularly the case at the Institut Curie (Paris). “We also know that a lot of people are traumatized by the dentist,” smiles the psychiatrist. Support through hypnosis facilitates care, for both the doctor and the patient. “
