The power of the umbilical cord on Covid-19, is what suggests a small study carried out on 24 patients which shows a high efficiency of stem cells extracted from the umbilical cord to treat patients with severe forms of the virus.
An astonishing and promising discovery
This astounding discovery, the results of which are very promising, was made by researchers at the University of Miami, Florida.
The clinical trial was carried out on 24 patients with the most severe forms of Covid-19 and hospitalized with severe acute respiratory distress syndrome.
The results, published in STEM CELLS Translational Medicine January 6, 2021, are encouraging: after one month, 91% of patients who received this new treatment survived (and 100% of those under 85) compared to 42% of patients who had received a placebo. In addition, the treated patients recovered in just two weeks.
Administer mother cells extracted from the umbilical cord
This treatment consists of intravenously administering mother cells extracted from the umbilical cord, stem cells with a strong anti-inflammatory power, but also antimicrobial, which have the advantage of promoting tissue regeneration and of being active in the lungs.
Each of the patients received two infusions a few days apart, either of umbilical cord stem cells or of placebo. “It was a double blind study. Doctors and patients did not know what was infused ”, specifies Dr. Ricordi, director of research.
This medical discovery is all the more promising since we know that the cells extracted from a single umbilical cord would make it possible to carry out 10,000 treatments and that this treatment did not trigger any serious adverse effects in the subjects of the study.
