More 30 cents in November 2017, more 1 euro in March 2018 … Smokers will have to prepare to spend 10 euros for their pack of cigarettes by 2020. While the price of the latter had not changed in 4 years, it has just undergone three changes since the arrival of the new government. As of Monday, April 30, taxes on cigarettes have been increased again, but this time around it won’t change much for the consumer. Indeed, several brands have decided to cut back on their margins in order to absorb this new increase in taxes.
Gradually increasing tobacco prices is the government’s strategy to reduce the number of smokers. Does it work? It seems so. According to France Info, after the price increase in March, sales are said to have fallen by 10%. This new tax hike, however, will not have much of an effect on the price of the package. The new prices are available for consultation here.
Some even lower their price!
The price of packs of 20 Marlboro Red, Philip Morris or Gauloises blondes cigarettes will not increase and will remain at 8 euros. Some brands like Camel or Lucky Strike will even lower their prices, the Camel filter going down to 7.90 euros, or 10 cents less than before. Indeed, since the neutral package introduced in 2007, only the price remains as a marketing argument. In general, prices now range between 7.50 euros and 9.30 euros, with an average of 7.90 euros for a package. “Almost half of the packs of 20 cigarettes will have a price equal to or greater than 8 euros,” assures the Ministry of Health.
